दान / Donation
दान का महत्त्व समाज में वही है जो शरीर में रक्त का है। यदि शरीर में रक्त की कमी हो जाए तो शरीर दुर्बल हो जाता है और उसे भिन्न-भिन्न प्रकार के विकार, रोग लग सकते है। इसी प्रकार समाज में दान के अभाव में कार्य करने वाली सामाजिक संस्थाएँ निर्बल हो जाऐंगी और इनके कार्य ना कर पाने की स्थिति में समाज में भी अनेकों विकार आ सकते हैं जो कि अनेकों दुखों का कारण बन सकते हैं। अतः जिसमें भी सामर्थ्य है उसे दान अवश्य देना चाहिए और जिसमें यह सामर्थ्य नही है उसे अपने में इस सामर्थ्य को पैदा करना चाहिए। दान मात्र धन से ही नही अपितु अपने समय के योगदान (योगदान शब्द में भी दान छिपा है) से, किसी संस्था के लिए निशुल्क कार्य द्वारा भी किया जा सकता है। जो व्यक्ति दान नही करता वह बहुत अभागा है। वह उस किसान की भाँति है जो समय बीतते जाने पर भी धरती में बीज नही बो रहा। उसकी सोच, कि मिट्टी में अनाज का बीज डालने पर बीज नष्ट हो सकता है पूरा अनाज ही नष्ट हो सकता है बहुत गलत सोच है। ऐसा व्यक्ति क्यों नही सोच पा रहा कि जो बीज वह आज बोएगा, उसकी देख-रेख करेगा, वह बीज कल पौधा बन कर उसे व अन्य जनों को कई गुना अधिक फल देगा। यह बीज नष्ट नही होगा अपितु कई नए बीजों को जन्म देगा जो हमें समृद्ध बनाएंगे। यह बीज कहीं नष्ट न हो जाए, ऐसा सोच कर जो किसान इसे नही बोएगा वह स्वयं तो भूखा मरेगा ही साथ में अपने समाज को भी भूखा मारेगा।
जो व्यक्ति आज दान नही कर रहा वह दयनीय है। वह वर्तमान में अपने पुराने कर्मों के पुण्य का फल भोग रहा है। जब इन पुण्य का फल समाप्त हो जाएगा तब वह क्या भोगेगा? तब उसे कष्ट ही भोगना होगा।
दान सदा उस वस्तु का किया जा सकता है जो व्यक्ति के पास हो और अन्य जनों को उसकी आवश्यकता हो। दान किया जा सकता है:
धन
वस्त्र
भोजन
उपयोगी वस्तु
विचार, ज्ञान
समय, परिश्रम
जो वस्तु आप अपने लिए हानिकारक मानते हैं, जानते हैं कि यह दूसरों के लिए भी कोई उपयोगी सिद्ध नही होगी या फिर उन्हें कोई हानि पहुंचा सकती है तो ऐसे में आप वस्तु का दान नही कर रहे अपितु आप पाप कर रहे है। दान सदा ऐसी वस्तु का होना चाहिए जिसे आप स्वयं के लिए उपयोगी समझते है और उससे किसी दूसरे का भी लाभ होता है। दान सदा ही अच्छी भावना के साथ करना चाहिए। आप जैसी भावना से दान देंगे आपको फल भी वैसा ही मिलेगा। आजकल दान देने के पीछे लोगों की भावना है कि
उनका नाम हो
उनकी प्रशंसा हो
दान दे कर कोई लाभ उठा सकें
जो दान माँग रहा है उसे मना नही किया जा सकता
ऐसी भावना से दान देने वालों का कुछ न कुछ उद्देश्य था। इनमें से किसी ने भी निष्काम भाव से दान नही दिया। दान दे कर इन्होंने जो कर्म किया है उसके फल का निर्धारण तो ये स्वयं ही पहले कर चुके है। इन्हें इसके अतिरिक्त कोई अन्य फल क्या मिलेगा!
केवल कुछ ही लोग ऐसे हैं जो दान देते हैं क्योंकि वे दान करना चाहते हैं, उसे अपना कर्तव्य समझते हैं। उनका दान निष्काम भाव से होता है। वे अपने दान का फल स्वयं निश्चित नही करते। उनके दान का फल भगवान उन्हें देता है। ऐसे लोगों को उनके दान का फल सदा ही अच्छा मिलेगा ऐसा नही कहा जा सकता। संभवतः उन्हें दान का फल बुरा मिले। पर ऐसा कैसे हो सकता है?
दान का फल कैसा मिलेगा यह इस पर भी निर्भर करता है कि जिसे हमने दान दिया वह दान के योग्य था भी कि नही, वह दान का पात्र था, कि नही। यदि वह दान का पात्र था तो निश्चित रूप से दान का फल अच्छा होगा। ऐसे में दान देने वाला व्यक्ति अवश्य आनंद पाएगा। परन्तु यदि दान कुपात्र को मिला है तो इससे निश्चित ही दुख उपजेगा। कुपात्र को दान देना पाप है।
अब हमें यह निश्चित करना होगा कि दान के लिए कौन पात्र है और कौन कुपात्र।
दान का पात्र वह है जो दान को लेकर उसे धर्मानुसार काम में लाता है और इसके विपरीत जो उस लिए हुए दान को सुकार्यों में न लगा कर कुकर्मों में लगाता है, धर्मानुसार काम में नही लगाता, या ऐसे कामों में लगाता है जिससे उसकी या किसी अन्य की हानि हो, वह दान पाने के योग्य नही, वह कुपात्र है।
दान देते समय, पात्र व कुपात्र का भली प्रकार विचार कर लेना चाहिए। यदि आप संत-महात्माओं को दान देते है तो परिणाम-रूप वे दीर्घ-काल तक जिऐंगे, हमें सही शिक्षा दे हमें धर्म-मार्ग पर चलवाएंगे, जिससे हमारा आत्म-कल्याण होगा। ऐसे में बुरे लोगों की, अधर्मियों की कमी होगी और धर्म पर चलने वालों का जीवन सुगम होगा और यह धरती स्वर्ग होगी (स्वर्ग: सु + वर्ग; अर्थात, अच्छे लोगों की धरती)। धरती पर अच्छे लोग अधिक होने से यह कहना सत्य होगा कि दान देने से लोगों को स्वर्ग प्राप्त होगा। पर हमें यहाँ यह नही भूलना चाहिए कि सुपात्र को दान देने से ही धरती स्वर्ग बनेगी। कुपात्र को दान देने से तो यही धरती नरक बन जाएगी। दान का पात्र वह है, जिसे दान देने से:-
१ संसार में दुखों की कमी हो। सभी प्राणियों का जीवन सुखमय हो।
२ संसार में अधर्म का नाश हो और लोग धर्म का पालन करने वाले बनें।
३ दान देने वाले को आत्म-कल्याण में सहायता मिले और वह दान दूसरों के लिए भी लाभकारी हो।
कुपात्र को दान देने से बहुत पाप होता है और संसार में पाप की वृद्धि होती है। धर्म का नाश होता है और दुखों में भी वृद्धि होती है। यदि कोई आप से दान माँगता है और आप उसे दान में धन देते है, परन्तु आप यह नही जानते कि इस धन से वह क्या करेगा तो आपने कोई अच्छा कार्य नही किया। वह उस धन को जैसे कार्य में लगाएगा आपको वैसा ही फल मिलेगा। मान ले उस व्यक्ति ने उस धन को जुआ खेलने में लगाया। इस प्रकार आपके धन से जुए में वृद्धि हुई। आपने यदि वह धन नही दिया होता तो वह व्यक्ति संभवतः जुआ न खेलता और जिसके साथ उसने जुआ खेला है वह व्यक्ति भी जुआ नही खेलता। इस जुए के खेल के कारण उन दोनो व्यक्तिओं के और अधिक पतन के कारण आप बने। आपके दिए साधन से ही उनका और अधिक पतन हो पाया। जुए की जीत मनाने के लिए यदि उसने शराब का सेवन किया और तदोपरांत अभद्र व्यवहार किया तो इस सब का पाप आपको भी जाएगा। कुपात्र को धन अथवा अन्य साधन देने से भिन्न-भिन्न प्रकार की हानि हो सकती है और इन पाप का भागी वह व्यक्ति भी है जिसने कुपात्र को साधन दे कर संसार में पाप की वृद्धि कराई।
आज अनेकों कुपात्रो को धन व अन्य साधन उपलब्ध हो रहे है जिससे पाप की भी वृद्धि हो रही है। इसी कारण प्राचीन-काल में राजा व्यभीचारी व्यक्ति को नगर से निकाल देते थे और उसकी संपत्ति आदि छीन लेते थे कि जिससे वह बुरे कर्म न कर सके और समाज में बुराई न फैला सके। जब भी समाज में बुराइयाँ बढ़ने लगें तो जान लें कि धन बुरे लोगों के हाथ में आ रहा है।
कुछ लोग पाप, छल, कपट आदि से धन कमा कर दान करते है। इस दान का उन्हें कोई फल प्राप्त नही होगा। यह धन जो उन्होंने दान में दिया है वास्तविकता में तो उनका नही है यह तो छल-कपट से प्राप्त किया धन है, इस धन के वास्तविक स्वामी वे नही है। जिस व्यक्ति से यह धन छला गया है प्रभु फल तो उसको देंगे। न्याय भी यही है कि जिसका धन है फल भी उसी को मिले।
दान देने वालों का कर्तव्य है कि वे दान सदा पात्र को ही दें ताकि उस दान से समाज का, बुरे लोगों का सुधार, उद्धार हो सके, संसार में सुखों की वृद्धि हो सके। तीन वस्तुओं का दान सभी को दिया जा सकता है। इसके लिए पात्र अथवा कुपात्र का विचार आवश्यक नही है।
१ भोजन
२ वस्त्र
३ अच्छे विचार
यदि किसी बुरे व्यक्ति को भोजन नही मिलेगा तो वह भोजन की लालसा में अपराध भी कर सकता है। उस बुरे व्यक्ति के लिए अपराध कोई बडी बात नही है। किसी बुरे व्यक्ति को भावी अपराध से बचाने के लिए उसे भोजन दे देना उचित है। समाज से भूख को समाप्त करना अनेकों बुराइयों को समाप्त करने के समान है क्योंकि हम नही जानते कि भूख को शांत करने के लिए व्यक्ति कौन-कौन से बुरे काम न कर ले। यही कारण है कि हमारे समाज में भूखों को खाना खिलाने हेतु, ‘भंडारा अथवा लंगर’ में भोजन कराने की प्रथा थी व है। वस्त्र व भोजन का कोई गलत प्रयोग नही कर सकता और अच्छे विचार तो हर प्रकार से कल्याण ही करेंगे।
हम न भूलें कि
दान आपकी उदारता का एक अंश है, दान सोच-समझ कर सही जगह दें।
दान त्याग की भावना में वृद्धि ही नही करता जिससे कि इच्छाएं क्षीण होती हैं अपितु वह लोभ व मोह का भी दमन करता है।
हाथ जोड़ कर प्रार्थना करने की अपेक्षा दोनों हाथों से सुपात्र की सहायता कई गुणा अच्छे परिणाम लाएगी।
धन की ३ गतियाँ ‘दान’, ‘भोग’ व ‘नाश’ बताई हैं। जो व्यक्ति न तो धन का दान करता है और न ही उसका भोग करता है, उसका धन नष्ट हो जाता है।
दान देने में किसी का अनादर, विलंब अथवा पश्चाताप न हो।
इस विश्व में याचक व प्रश्न करने वाले सभी जगह हैं परन्तु दाता (देने वाले) व उत्तर देने वाले बहुत ही कम हैं।
Donation
The importance of donation in society is the same as that of blood in the body. Deficiency of blood in the body, will cause weakness and the body may suffer from different types of disorders and diseases. Similarly, in the absence of donations in the society, the social welfare institutions will become weak and may not be able to function properly which can bring disorder and sorrow in the society. Therefore, whoever has the capability to donate, must donate and the one who does not have this capability, must work hard to be capable to donate. Donation may not necessarily be money only but can also be in the form of of one’s time or working for free for any organization. The person who does not donate is unfortunate. He is like a farmer who is not sowing seeds even if the time is passing by. His thinking that if the grain seed is put in the soil, the seed may get destroyed, and so his complete grain stock may get wasted, is wrong. Why can’t such a person think that the seed he sows today and take care of, will become a plant tomorrow and give him many times more seeds and grains. The farmer who does not sow his seeds thinking that they may get destroyed and wasted, will not only starve himself but will also starve his society.
The person who is capable of donating and is not donating today, is pathetic. He is currently enjoying the fruits of the merits of his old deeds. What will he enjoy when the fruits of these virtues are exhausted? Then he will have to suffer.
One should only donate what he possess when an other person is in need of it. Donations can be of:
Money / Wealth
Clothes
Food
Necessary Goods
Thoughts, Knowledge
Time, Labour
Anything which you consider harmful to yourself, believe that the thing is useless to others or may cause harm to others in any way, then by donating such a thing you are committing a sin. Donation should always be of such a thing which you consider useful for yourself and beneficial for someone else also. Donations should always be made in good spirit. Your spirit while donating will define the result. Nowadays people’s motive behind donating is that
they get fame and become popular
they are praised
they get some benefit by donating
the one who is asking for donation cannot be refused
The person has already desired and determined the result of him donating. Apart from this, what other benefit will he get!
There are only a few people who give to charity because they want to donate, they consider it their duty. Their donation is done with a selfless spirit. They do not decide the results of their donations on their own. God gives them the fruit of their donations. It cannot be said that such people will always get rewarded for their donation. Perhaps they may get bad outcome. But how can this happen?
Reward of charity depends on whether the person to whom we gave charity was worthy of it or not, whether he deserved it or not. If he was a deserving person then surely the reward of charity would be good. In this case the person making charity will surely be happy. But if the donation has been received by an undeserving person, then it will surely cause sorrow. Giving charity to an undeserving person is a sin.
Now we have to weigh who deserves donation and who does not. A deserving person is one, who on receiving charity uses it according to his ‘Dharm’. One who does not use the donation for good work, rather uses it for bad deeds, does not use it according to ‘Dharm’, or uses it in in a way which may harm him or any other person is not worthy of receiving charity. He is an undeserving person. Before making donation, thorough evaluation of deserving and undeserving candidate must be made. If you give donations to ‘Saints and Mahatmas’, they will live longer, make us follow the path of ‘Dharm’ by giving us the right education, which will lead to our self-upliftment. This willreduce the number of bad people. Those who follow righteousness will have an easy life and this earth will be a heaven. Since there will be more good people on earth, it would be true to say that by giving charity, people will get heaven. But we should not forget here that only by donating (giving back to society) to the deserving, the earth will become heaven.
Donations to an undeserving person, may make this earth hell. The deserving candidate for donation is one, to whom, when donated:-
the suffering in the world reduces and life of living beings becomes happier.
the unrighteousness and sin in the world will decrease. More and more people will follow the path of ‘Dharm’.
the donation will help self-upliftment and will be beneficial to others as well.
Donating to an undeserving person incurs a lot of sin and increases the sufferings in the world. If someone asks you for charity and you give him money in charity, but you do not know what he will do with this money, then you have not done any good. Suppose that the person gambles with this money, this will encourage the bad practice of gambling. If you had not given that money, then that person would probably not have gambled and the person with whom he gambled also would not have gambled. You became the reason for this gambling and also for the further downfall of both these men. Further, to celebrate the victory of gambling, if he consumed alcohol and then behaved indecently, then you would also partake in the sin. Giving money or other means to an undeserving person can lead to different types of losses and dangers for which the person making donations will also be partially responsible.
Today, money and other means are getting in reach of many undeserving people, due to which sin and sufferings are also increasing. For this reason, in ancient times, kings used to expel the bad person from the city and confiscate his assets etc. so that he could not do any further bad deeds and cause harm in the society. If you notice that evil is increasing in the society then it may be a consequence of money getting into the hands of bad people.
Some people earn money through unlawful practices like corruption, deceit, exploitation etc. and donate a part of it. They will not get any reward for their donation. This money given in charity is not theirs in reality. It is the money obtained by fraud, or exploitation or otherwise. The person from whom this money has been cheated, God will reward him. It will not be just if the unrightful owner of this money would be rewarded.
It is the duty of the donors that they give donations only to the deserving person so that through the donations, improvement plans can be run for the bad people in society, happiness and prosperity can increase in the world. Three things can be donated to anyone without hesitation.
1. Meal
2. Clothes
3. Good ideas
If a bad person does not get food, then he may commit a crime. Crime is not a big deal for a bad person. It is advisable to give food to such a person to save him from committing future crime. Eliminating hunger from the society is like eliminating many evils because we do not know what bad things a person may do to pacify his hunger. This is the reason that in our society it was and is still the practice of feeding the hungry by arranging ‘Bhandara and Langar’. No one can misuse clothes and food. Good thoughts will do good only in every way.
Let us not forget that
Charity is a part of your generosity. Donate wisely.
Donation not only increases the spirit of renunciation, it also attenuates desires, suppresses greed and attachment.
Helping a deserving person with both hands will bring multifold results than praying with folded hands.
The three possible outcomes of wealth are ‘Donation’, ‘Utilisation’ and ‘Destruction’. The wealth of a person who does not donate or utilises it, gets destroyed.
While donating no one should be disrespectful and there shall be no delay or regret in donating
